Volume 32:8
August 2015
"It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man."
Psalm 118:8 (KJV)

...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,...

(Romans 3:23 ESV)

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Romans 6:23 ESV)

...but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(Romans 5:8 ESV)

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

(Romans 10:10-13 ESV)

I am sorry to report that there were no registrations for the annual safari to the KU Natural History Museum.  The schedule for this safari had been posted in this newsletter for months.

Unfortunately, no one signed up for the safari.  It was a hot day, so maybe it is for the better.  Our esteemed safari guides, Kevin Anderson and Bob Farwell, have made another offer to lead a group tour to the KU Natural History museum in Lawrence, with fossil hunts along the way.

If you are interested, and enough others sign up, we will reschedule the safari.  The option to sign up will remain on the CSAMA website safari signup page for now, for anyone interested.  So if you would like to go to the KU Natural History Museum at some future date, please sign up with a suggestion for a date.  We will get back with you if it is rescheduled.   Please sign up at this link:

On a similar note, we occasionally receive inquiries from interested parties about presentations they’ve missed at our monthly CSAMA meetings.  Our most recent program was a very interesting book report given by Dave Penny on July 7th, Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings.  The book, by Charles Hapgood, carries the following description on Amazon.com:

Hapgood produce(ed) concrete evidence of an advanced worldwide civilization existing many thousands of years before ancient Egypt. He … found the evidence in many beautiful maps long known to scholars, the Piri Reis Map that shows Antarctica, the Hadji Ahmed map, the Oronteus Finaeus and other amazing maps. Hapgood concluded that these maps were made from more ancient maps from the various ancient archives around the world, now lost. Hapgood also concluded that the ancient mapmakers were in some ways much more advanced scientifically than Europe in the 16th century, or than the ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, and Babylonian. Not only were these unknown people more advanced in mapmaking than any people prior to the 18th century, it appears they mapped all the continents. The Americas were mapped thousands of years before Columbus. Antarctica was mapped when its coasts were free of ice. There is evidence that these people must have lived when the ice age had not yet ended in the Northern Hemisphere and when Alaska was still connected with Siberia by the Pleistocene, ice age “land bridge.”1

This was essentially the same talk that Dave Penny gave on this subject several years ago.  Dave Penny ties together the maps in the book with young-earth creationist convictions which go beyond the secular ideas in the book itself.

Creation Variations

by David Penny

Among young-earth, young-universe creationists, there exist a number who propose a variety of models attempting to harmonize Einstein’s “theory of general relativity” with an earth whose age is less than 7,000 years. Most of these hypotheses involve time dilation: i.e., a slow passage of time in Earth’s frame of reference, accompanied by a rapid expansion of the universe in the universe’s frame of reference. These models are usually based upon the Genesis reference to the Creator’s stretching out of the heavens on the fourth day of creation. To explain this, these relativistic creationists, using the terminology of general relativity, say that the Creator stretched out the time-space continuum with the celestial bodies in it. However, there is an alternative explanation which conforms to the 6-day creation model of Genesis 1 in absolute time and space, yet does not draw upon general relativity’s elastic time-space continuum.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

(Titus 2:11-14 ESV)

Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,...

(Acts 3:19 ESV)

...yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

(Galatians 2:16 ESV)

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)

Genetic Investigation of Elephantids:
Woolly Mammoth vs. Indian Elephant

by Douglas Roger Dexheimer

If you recall, a number of our recent articles have featured the concept of baramins, or created kinds.  Examples of baramins from many phylogenetic families of creatures have appeared in these pages: canine, feline, bovine, equine, camelid, and so forth, with examples of hybrids in each family suggesting the idea that they are so closely related as to be of a certain kind.  Most hypothesizing is based on hybrids of living creatures.

A June, 2015 article in this newsletter featured studies on the pachyderms -- mastodons, mammoths, and elephants -- in which some of the DNA from these creatures was compared, and found to suggest a common ancestor that “rode the ark” with Noah.  Subsequent variations within kind were traced.

African and Asian elephants, along with now-extinct species such as the mammoth, … and mastodon, are most likely all descended from the one basic ‘kind’ present on the Ark. That “elephant” would have contained all the genetic information for the possible species variation to come as its descendants spread across the globe after the Flood. …The “culling” of some of this information by natural selection resulted in fixed characteristics within each group — sometimes the result of fine-tuned adaptation to the environment (for example, the larger ears of the African elephant). In other words, “modern” elephants contain less genetic information than their ancestors.1

The implication is that the wooly mammoth was created with genes that enabled its survival in the extreme climates of northern latitudes, and that these genes were evidently lost over time, since they do not seem to exist in the genetic code of modern elephants.

The DNA of the wooly mammoth's bone, preserved in the Siberian permafrost, was examined for a particular gene which codes for the oxygen-transporting protein hemoglobin, which allowed the wooly mammoths to keep their tissues supplied with oxygen, even at very low temperatures. This same gene was compared with that from Asian and African elephants. “The elephant hemoglobin functioned much like human hemoglobin, delivering oxygen more efficiently at warmer temperatures. That helps the hemoglobin transport oxygen to the hardest-working muscles. But the mammoth hemoglobin released oxygen at a steady rate regardless of the temperature.”2

So here we have another example of the incredible designs of creatures. A mammoth's hemoglobin was able to keep his blood circulating oxygen to the body, even in arctic and alpine environments.

Geophysical Discovery:
La Basin

by Douglas Roger Dexheimer

Two months ago, the earthquakes in the Himalayas were discussed in this newsletter in connection to the presentation by Dr. Andrew Snelling at the local (Kansas City area) AIG Conference.  We also noted the major earthquakes that hit around the "Ring of Fire," specifically in Sumatra, Japan, and Chile.  This article will concentrate on the fault zones in the state of California.  Most folks have heard of the San Andreas Fault, a strike-slip fault running along the west coast of the U.S.

A strike-slip fault is a geologic fault in which the blocks of rock on either side of the fault slide horizontally in opposite directions along the line of the fault plane.1

It has been plotted from San Francisco in the north, to the southern border east of San Diego.

There has been speculation that the western side of the San Andreas Fault will slide under the Pacific Ocean, creating a multitude of new ocean-front real estate properties.  This is not likely, since the fault has horizontal motion, not vertical.

Researchers at UC Santa Barbara have just discovered something super fascinating about another lower-profile (but very important) fault: the Newport-Inglewood Fault, which runs along the Westside through the LA basin and was responsible for the 6.4 Long Beach earthquake in 1933. The new findings suggest the fault might be way deeper than previously thought and that it may be the ancient collision site of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, says the UC Santa Barbara Current, the university's official news site.2

UCSB geologist Jim Boles took samples from 24 oil wells along a 30-mile section of the fault. Over a third of the samples indicated high levels of "primordial" helium-3, whose only source on Earth is in the mantle, which lies under the Earth's crust.  (Scientists also analyzed the carbon dioxide in the samples, and found it too was from the mantle.)

If that leaked helium-3 is coming from the mantle, it suggests that the Newport-Inglewood Fault is a lot deeper than scientists had thought and is in fact "directly or indirectly connected with the mantle." That's especially incredible because the fault "maintains a significant pathway through the crust," as Boles puts it:

[I]t appears to cut all the way from the mantle (or close to it) up to the surface of the Earth where we can see it in those hills.  Furthermore, scientists have found blueschist rock at the bottom of deep wells; that's "a metamorphic rock only revealed when regurgitated to the surface via geologic upheaval," and it suggests that the fault is the site of a 30-million-year-old subduction zone, where the Pacific plate collided with (and began to slide under) the North American plate. That's crazy because Newport-Inglewood Fault is 40 miles west of the present-day edge of the plate, at the San Andreas Fault system.3

The subduction zones resulted in the volcanic mountain chain running along the west coast, from Alaska to Chile.

This lends credence to the catastrophic plate tectonics hypothesis proposed years ago by Dr. John Baumgardner.  In other words, modern discoveries agree with the model of the geophysical changes that shaped the continents at the time of the Great Flood of Genesis 6.   As Dr. Baumgardner showed in his mathematical model, the Pacific Plate slid under the American continental tectonic plate.

Elsewhere these data show that sites west of the San Andreas Fault are moving north-westward relative to sites to the east of the fault by several cm/yr. They also document that Easter Island on the Nazca Plate in the south-eastern Pacific is currently moving eastward at about 7 cm/yr. This implies seafloor spreading is occurring across the East Pacific Rise to the west of Easter Island at a rate of about 14 cm/yr.

These data document the reality of the defining aspects of plate tectonics in operation in our world today. It is hard for me to imagine an alternative explanation.

These measurements demonstrate, with little room for debate, that plates are real entities and that they are currently in motion across the face of the earth. The measurements document the reality of plate divergence, or spreading, across the mid-ocean ridge system. With equal clarity they document the reality of plate convergence, i.e. subduction, at deep ocean trenches. They also document the reality of transform faults, such as the San Andreas, along certain portions of plate boundaries. In other words, these data document the reality of the defining aspects of plate tectonics in operation in our world today. It is hard for me to imagine an alternative explanation.4
